Today its legacy is mixed, but it remains a key to understanding UW's history and enduring relationship to religion. This essay, written by historian Daniel G. Hummel, Upper House's Director of University Engagement, offers the first sustained treatment of UW's relationship to organized religion encompassing its full 175-year history. It has been supported by Upper House and the Higher Pursuits Project, through a grant awarded by the John Templeton Foundation. In its role as a Christian Study Center, Upper House is dedicated to serving the University of Wisconsin-Madison and engaging in thoughtful dialogue on questions of faith and higher learning.
