The purpose of this report is to document and evaluate my process as the dramaturg for The Unseen Hand by Sam Shepard. The production of this play was presented at California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) in May of 2019 under the direction of Stephen Rothman.In the following chapters I will disclose the process at work in serving as the dramaturg for The Unseen Hand. I was drawn to this project out of a desire to provide context to the underpinnings that shaped this play and served as the core concept in the CSULA production, namely the Spaghetti Westerns of Sergio Leone, the Science Fiction movies of the mid-twentieth century, and the unrest of the 1960's in America to produce what Stephen Rothman defined as a Sam Shepard fever dream.Accordingly, my inspiration comes from as disparate a collection of theorists and cultural commentators as the aforementioned influences on this production and my goal was and continues to be as a contextual guide. The writings of Frederick Jackson Turner informed my understanding of what defined the American Frontier that inspired both a sanitized view of the West that serves as a sharp contrast to the more realistic portrayal in Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966). Additionally, Susan Sontag and Vivian Sobchack were equally instrumental in navigating the cultural influences revealed in the science fiction of the 1950's and 1960's.Finally, I continue to find inspiration in the writings of Sam Shepard and the artists that choose to tackle both his commercially successful work as well as the obscure pieces that give insight to his mastery.
