Description

Arlington Village is a garden apartment complex begun in 1939 in response to a housing shortage for families coming to nearby Washington, D.C., during the build-up to WW II. Built in the Colonial Revival style by developer Gustav Ring and architect Harvey Warwick, it was a planned community on 53 acres in Arlington, Va. Created in a park-like setting that had a natural creek and woods and a commercial strip, it was situated along Columbia Pike where its residents were well poised to watch Arlington grow and flourish. This book tells the story of the first generation of residents who lived there in the war years and through the 1940s and 1950s. It includes 48 pictures from private collections that show daily life within a strong community. The author interviewed business leaders of that era and many adults who grew up in the Village, as she did. It includes stories of kids who enjoyed playing as cowboys, roller skating, spending time in the creek, having acorn battles, going to the local movie theater every Saturday, first jobs, and cotillion club. It was a great time to be a kid, and children growing up then had a much different childhood than kids have today. The book is nostalgic, historic, sweet, humorous, and well-written. It will transport the reader to the great era of post-war America.
