* Three-volume set, bound together. Henry Walter Grey found crime an easier burden than expected. In place of his former dread, he now dreaded disclosure only. 'Wat', as the town leaders knew him, was owner of the Daneford Bank and anxious to retain the legacy he'd inherited. After all, Wat reasoned, it wasn't his fault the bank was struggling in a difficult economic climate. Hadn't he practically been forced to dip into client funds? After Wat's first indiscretion, it seemed only sensible to go deeper. But fate intervened as Wat dipped his plump fingers into the fortunes of his richest client, an aging baronet. Far from being discovered, however, Wat was asked to become executor of the baronet's will. The estate would be left to his client's heir, the lovely young Maud, upon her 22nd birthday. Until then, Wat would control her fortune. For the first time in years, Wat Grey relaxed. It had been a difficult period - at work and at home. Wat had married and bought the town's old Manor House, steeped in myth and superstition. Neighbours gossiped that the house exercised an evil influence over those who fell under the shadow of its displeasure. No family had lived there for generations. But Wat Grey was, first and foremost, a banker. The Manor House was a bargain. He bought it for a song. Wat insisted on hosting merry parties at the Manor House when they moved in. His wife, however, became increasingly secluded and withdrawn. No ladies were invited to dinner; no ladies stayed for twenty-four hours; and, beyond a few afternoon callers, no ladies visited at all. With difficulties at the bank and little solace at home, Wat began to despise his wife and her increasingly eccentric ways. All of his problems would be resolved, Wat decided, if only he were a bachelor. What then? Wat contemplated until the answer became obvious: he would marry the lovely young Maud, heir to the baronet's fortune, and in one stroke wipe out the history of his crimes and begin life anew. And with that revelation, Wat Grey stopped relying on fate to decide his future, and decided to take matters into his own hands.
