The Wisdom of Adders is a novella set in 2171 in a rather dystopian Eastern Cape in South Africa, a period succeeding on a century or two of slow global collapse and decimation of populations, so that remaining humans eke out various kinds of living in somewhat isolated communities. The story begins in such a community (unnamed but recognisably Grahamstown to those who know it). The protagonist is Shawn Xaba, a sassy, tomboyish young woman, rather San (Bushman)-like in a population mostly varieties of brown. She exasperatedly leaves town in search of her father, who himself migrated away when she was seven. Accompanied by a man named Mali, initially hateful to her but ultimately sympathetic, she pursues over seven or eight days rumours that her father is holed up with a tight new community in the Cockscomb mountains. They make a mostly pretty gruelling journey, involving a series of encounters, over a landscape either long scoured to the bone, reverting to wilderness, dotted with tiny communities, or traversed by bands of ferocious marauders and occasional canny traders..."
