Early photographs show a barn built by George Tolgo and his brother Pete in 1917. With the barn they could have horses and cattle on the lower level half and some living quarters on the top level with bunks and benches. Heat rises. The heat from the animals helped keep the top of the barn warmer than the floor where the animals rested. The problem was with horses. Horses didn't mind the hay, but they did not like sharing the barn with the cattle. The new cattle barn was built on the right hand side for the cows and their calves. The large barn was the living quarters for George with a small kitchen area until the two brothers built a house before George's marriage to Thelma in 1929. The rest of the large barn was used to store hay. From this top level the men could also see over the trees to the neighbors named Neilsons a half mile away to get a signal if there was work that day or not. Lumber needed to be cut. Fields needed to be cleared. The neighbors had an elaborate system for signing each other. Pete and George made extra money working on neighbor's farms, especially during Roosevelt's New Deal.The music Patrick DeRosia played as a one man band made him popular. Crowds cheered as he entered the room. DeRosia was named after a rose in the French language. The Rose focused on Mary Melinda Truckee and she walked away remembering his music. After Patrick DeRosia proposed marriage to Mary Truckee, she married the French fiddler and began a family. Thelma was the second child born to the couple in 1910. Ten years after George Tolgo was born.
