Kelly Smith, a valley girl from Los Angeles, has joined a group of American Sikhs in search of a more stable and inspired life. Her talent has a singer is recognized and she travels to perform hymns from the Golden Temple, the most sacred of the Sikh shrines located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. In India she runs into Saran Gill, a Punjabi journalist, who is searching the answers to the conflict between the distinct Sikh identity and individual freedom. Saran has covered the political struggles of the Sikhs in the 1980's and followed a series of events, which breed religious hatred between Hindus and Sikhs. In the year 1984, both Saran and Kelly are inside the Temple Complex during the attack by the Indian Army to take out a charismatic, fundamentalist Sikh leader. They witness first hand the ensuing battle between the Sikhs and the Army. The decision to enter the Temple complex set in motion forces leading to the revenge killing of the prime minister of India by her Sikh body guards.
