This is a book full of excitement and adventure for ages 9-12. It is the story of Tornado Jones, his best friend Paul Travis, and their adventures in the Rockies. Tornado leaves his Gram for the summer and goes to visit Paul, whose father isbuilding a dam in Idaho. The boys camp out in the mountains, photograph an eagle's nest, see a beaver working on his dam, and help an old prospector search for precious metals. They find something even more valuable than gold or uranium, although they have trouble seeing it at first. Tornado even does some rodeo calf-riding and helps rescue an animal in distress. Tornado's character has been formed by rural life in Nebraska and reflects the values of family and friendship, hard work, self-reliance, honesty, integrity, and the abiding belief that "good overbalances bad." These books chronicle some ofthe changes occurring during Tornado's youth, and his personal growth as he discovers the world around him ABOUT THE AUTHOR Trella Lamson Dick was born May 29, 1889, in Orleans, Nebraska, and died May 10, 1974. She was a school teacher and free-lance writer who wrote numerous books and articles for children. Her first book, Tornado Jones, won the CharlesW. Follett Award. Tornado Jones on Sentinel Mountain is her second book in a series of three. While it is a work of fiction, it is based in fact. Three dams were built in Idaho on the Snake River, with the first completed in 1959. This was the Brownlee dam, the highest one, located about 230 miles from Gooding. Eleven miles north of there is the Oxbow dam; 42 miles above that is the Hells Canyon dam. Sentinel Peak is about 100 miles west of Hells Canyon, "as the crow flies." Although this book was written over 50 years ago, the author's fine story telling will captivate today's young readers. In bringing this book back, any negative stereotypes common to earlier times have been revised during editing.
