This Novel is based on the true story of a character named Alisa. In the reflection of the adult Alisa, she relives her troubled childhood. Alisa remembers, through a child's eyes, the struggling adolescent years of progressive mistrust, along with the physical, mental and spiritual torment in the disturbing scenes of her life. Alisa has dreams and mystical events that keep her striving to overcome unbelievable odds. She finds herself guided by a spiritual being that consoles and encourages her when human role models and guardians are not to be found. This spiritual guide is with her throughout her childhood and young life, only to be recognized in visual form as she faces trauma and decisions as an adult. Alisa seeks approval and definition as a person of worth by exposing herself to adult manipulation by others. She strains to develope a meaningful character, while facing defeat in situations that would shatter a lesser person. Alisa develops a sixth sense toward foreboding events, and even though despair seems evident, she somehow cannot bring herself to overcome all the obstacles. She survives the bouts with the impending destruction of her will never losing that little spark of spiritual guidance that remains buried deep in her heart. The small voice in her mind will prove to be one of the only elements of her nature that will bring her comfort and stability through years of defeat and degradation. She finds satisfaction in developing into an independent, caring adult who faces unbelievable odds to become a contributing member of her community and gives back to society what it seemed to deny her all her life. One of the strengths of the novel is the unique style in which Alisa guides the reader through seemly unreal but authentic situations. Years of betrayal of her trust at the hands of relatives and strangers gives depth to the frustration and fear of a child without hope. At one point she is found wandering the streets in a large city with only her imaginary friend for guidance. She is confused and unsure of her safety with the authority figures that should be giving instruction and protection. She finds a few short-lived episodes of help from caring adults, but these are rare during her formative years. When left with relatives she suffers almost unspeakable mental and physical abuse. Left at their mercy, she begins to realize that those who say I love you' rarely mean that phrase. The indomitable human spirit seeks to console and encourage her even when those closest to her cause deep and unforgivable pain. Depression and discouragement are her constant companions as she seeks desperately to find someone, anyone that will help her understand why she feels so worthless and betrayed. Her mere existence seems in doubt many times, but her childhood companion always encourages her to keep trying for there is hope for the future. Alisa shares struggling adolescent years of mistrust and rebellion, while involving the reader in her desire to be someone of value and importance. Having a common desire as most all young adults, she endeavors to prove her own worth to those around her which brings the reader to empathize with Alisa and they become captivated with her struggles. She seeks approval and definition as a person of worth and is unwittingly exposed to adult manipulation by those that should be protecting and guiding her toward success. Alisa strains to develop a worthwhile character while facing defeat in situations that would shatter a lesser person.
