In 1885, anger among Alberta's Cree tribe at Indian agent Thomas Quinn whose inadequate rations had allegedly kept the Cree in a state of near-starvation would eventually explode into violence. Led by Wandering Spirit, young Cree men attacked officials, clergy and settlers in the small settlement of Frog Lake in the District of Saskatchewan in the Northwest Territories on 2 April 1885. Nine settlers were murdered in the incident. In 1885, Theresa Gowanlock (1863-1899) and Theresa Delaney (1865-1913) would go on to co-author a harrowing account of their time held captive in the camp of Cree chief Big Bear, titled "Two Months in the Camp of Big Bear: the Life and Adventures of Theresa Gowanlock and Theresa Delaney. "In introducing their book, Gowanlock writes: "It is my bounden duty to give to the public a truthful and accurate description of my capture, detention and misfortunes while captive in the camp of Big Bear. The task may be an irksome one and I might with justice shrink from anything which would recall the past. Still it is a debt of gratitude I owe to the people of this broad dominion. To the brave men who sacrificed their business and comfort and endured the hardships incident to a soldier's life, in order to vindicate the law." Delaney in her conclusion notes that "The troubles of the North-West have proven that there is no land, however, happy, prosperous or tranquil it may be, that is totally free from the dangers of internal revolts,--it has likewise proven that our country possesses the means, the strength, the energy and stamina, to crush the hydra of disunion or rebellion, no matter where it may appear."
