The purpose of this study was to examine the reports of Polish immigrants regarding their United States college entry process. Scholars have examined the college choice process of immigrant students; however, limited literature focused on immigrants from Poland. Institutions also do not collect data on immigrant students (Gray, Rolph, & Melamid, 1996). This study utilized an exploratory phenomenological oral history approach with first generation Polish immigrants who were enrolled, attend, or have attended college in the United States. The guiding research question was: what factors influence the United States college entry of first generation Polish immigrants? Interviews were conducted with nine first generation Polish immigrants. Participants in this study identified six factors that influence their college entry process. The factors include the influence of parents, family members, and peers, country of origin, government bureaucracy, economics and employment prospects, cultural institutions, and language. To aid this student group in their college choice process, practitioners need to include their parents, family members, and peers in the admission process. Further recommendations for practice include awareness of the immigrant experience of first generation Polish immigrants, awareness of visa laws, understanding the impact of economics and employment, outreach efforts to influential cultural institutions, and awareness of issues related to learning English for immigrant students. Future research needs to examine the influential factors in depth. This includes the influence of families, the immigrant experience, the immigration process, employment, cultural institutions, and English language attainment for first generation Polish immigrants. To obtain a comprehensive understanding of influence, each factor should be examined within a separate study.
