A Spanglish translation of my grandfather, Gregorio Piña, Sr.'s Memoir written on a BIG CHIEF tablet, born in 1892 in El Salineno, Texas of Mexican parents from Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas. His mother was previously married to a wealthy man who was killed during the south Texas terrors by Mexican bandits of 1879. His mother becomes pregnant and her four children are taken away because she shamed the family. His mother was given to a sheepherder who form a marriage, his parents. Gregorio shares a hard life of living in extreme poverty yet happy in the Rio Grande Valley. They travel to work the pizcas/harvest into Kenedy, Texas. He is married at the age of 18 to his wife to be, a 29-year-old, to settle him down. After moving to Laredo, Texas my grandparent's marriage ends for he was young and a ladies' man. After the divorce, his exploits take him towards the end of the Mexican Revolution, along with Pancho Villa while pledging his allegiance to Adolfo de la Huerta as he is tortured by the Mexican government. Later, as a barber he travels throughout Texas experiencing bias as a Mexican. He is told by a Puerto Rican that to get a job he must introduce himself as a Spaniard. The absence of his children and the divorce lead him to heavy drinking to the point of selling his shirt for ten cents in order to cross over the border into Nuevo Laredo to get a drink. A gringo offers him money to get a fix if he deals him some marijuana. Gregorio takes the offer to get an alcohol fix and acquires the requested deal. His travels then take him into New Orleans Magazine Barber shop and the Houston where he is arrested for the marijuana deal he was set up. He spends eight months in what he called La Casa del Diablo and completes his probation clearing up his name to regain his license a Spaniard barber. Gregorio eventually opens his own barbershop in Port Lavaca, Texas after marrying Sophia, his love.
