VOICES IN THE FOREST is a work of fiction that tells the story of George, a mischievous boy whose life unfolds full of adventure in a Croatian village during the golden age of Tito's Yugoslavia to Croatia's War of Independence. The collection of stories highlights village life and speaks to the rich cultural heritage of the South Slavic peoples. The author's skill as a storyteller is revealed through the voices of children, village folk, and representatives of authority which intertwine against the backdrop of ethno-cultural tensions and discrimination. George's story begins as a child when he is kicked out of school which sets him on a path of misfortune concluding in Croatia's War of Independence. His story and that of the villagers is about mischief, craftiness, retribution, brutality, and the persistent struggle for a better life. It is also about the sanctuary found in a life-giving forest, the ingenuity of children's imaginations, the humor of village folk, and the nostalgia for a world quickly disappearing.About the Author:Vinko Vrbanić's remarkable début with the coming-of-age story VOICES IN THE FOREST brought him out of anonymity into the literary world. Acclaimed novelist and a short story writer, Vinko Vrbanić received first prize for a short story and second shared price for his drama on the national literary competitions in Croatia. His other works include a collection of short stories published in Croatian language, and more short stories published on literary portals. As a compelling storyteller, he brings a deeply human understanding of the fate of village folk in Slavonia, the largest province of Croatia, with peasant humor and provocative undercurrents. The villager's daily dramas unfold in the foreground, while the killing zone looms in the background. Croatian by birth, Vrbanić chose to fight as a foot soldier in the country's hottest war zone near Vukovar during Croatia's War of Independence (1991-95). These calamitous events sparked his interest in writing.About the Translator:Svjetlana Vrbanić completed an English degree from the University of Toronto and has worked as a newspaper reporter and editor. VOICES IN THE FOREST is the first novel she has translated from the Croatian language into English. It provided her with many challenges, but also with much satisfaction, as well as expanded insights into both languages and their usage. What is more, the author is her uncle and she feels proud to have translated and edited his Croatian-language text for the wider English-speaking audience.Review:Like Mozart, our heroes are not afraid of death, on the contrary, they know that they must accept their destinies with joy and passion, whatever they may be, and I am convinced that George, the hero of VOICES IN THE FOREST, at the time of his death, unlike Mozart's Don Giovanni in the final scene of the opera, accepted the offered hand from beyond the other side, and a request to repent so he repented, realizing at the time of his death that salvation is the only true purpose of every human existence.-- Ivo Žurić (translator of I MIRACOLI DI PADRE PIO by Renzo Allegri into the Croatian language)
