I was talking with a friend about his relative who was going through some very difficult times in his marriage. The way his wife spoke to him was disrespectful and discouraging and they were having a lot of arguments from nothing more than the tone of her voice. Her mother also spoke with the same kind of tone. One day after leaving her mother's house she expressed her frustration about her mother's tone of voice to her husband and asked; “I don't talk to you like my mother does to my dad, do I?” He realized he had to tell her the truth and said that she did. Her response was shocking. Instead of listening to her husband and learning about herself, she just denied it. He couldn't believe it when she said, “Oh no, I don't sound anything like her.” She didn't want to be like her mother, but she was. She continued to speak to her husband in the same tone of voice and he did not know where to go in their relationship. That relationship eventually ended in a divorce. Wrong tone of voice can kill a relationship.“What is the tone of your communication” is a book that helps you think through the way you communicate with your spouse, that is, the tone of your voice. Tone of voice for both the woman and the man are addressed, showing that each uses tone of voice for different purposes whether consciously or unconsciously.Tone of voice is such an obvious factor in life, but we seldom delve into how it is used and how to deal with it, as well as how to use it properly.
