Description

"When A Woman's Fed Up" follows one character's journey through the procedures normally involved in an effort to find, keep, or reconcile the loss of a bond with another person. Through the perspective of Alexandria Campbell, who starts, according to her, with "everything that a woman could ask for except a good man," the work explores the relative complexities of the human spirit. Along the way issues are highlighted that relate to identity, loyalty, belief, and courage in various forms.Born into an "above poverty yet below middle class family," Alexandria is a "preacher's kid" who is forced to recognize that her "main fault is men." She provides an introduction into her life recalling that her mother once told her "If I want things to change in my life then I must change first." At the start we find her facing the possibility of a cold and brutal winter until she meets Glen in a somewhat bizarre way while attending a Valentine's Day gathering at her apartment complex. They seemingly form a bond, but when a diagnosis of pregnancy arises, it leaves Alex questioning her future and avoiding Glen's calls. An accident creates some tense moments, but the other driver shows a degree of concern causing her to wonder "Where was this man two months ago before Glen, before this baby." She finds herself feeling a bit overjoyed when Glen appears to be accepting and wants to be present for every step of the pregnancy. Alex then moves through a series of challenges as she attempts to balance her personal and professional choices, while dealing with the physical and emotional aspects usually associated with pregnancy. One incident ostensibly leads to the death of Alex's only child and a friendship that spanned a decade. Alex feels guilty and turns heavenward conveying that "I feel that I am at the end of my rope. Just take this pain away."In the closing pages Alex decides to look forward to a future that she seems to be building on her own terms. She recalls past experiences and hints at the underlying theme of the story, thinking, "if all of this has taught me anything I have learned to first love myself and live for me." This tale combines elements of suspense as well as emotion and is designed to capture the imagination as well as to provoke thought.
