When the father of Ken Hanson was killed in a traffic accident, Ken had just graduated from high school and hoped to go to college on a basketball scholarship. Instead, he had to stay to operate the family hardware and lumber business and care for his mother and younger sister. To keep up his basketball interests and earn some much-needed extra income, he decided to learn to be a basketball referee. At the same time, he turned the lumber shed into an unusual basketball court-featuring a narrow but long interior driveway but with a high ceiling suited to Ken's long-shot specialty. And he had fun there, challenging friends and visitors to a game of HORSE. Then his Minnesota friends with Princeton connections heard that their school had been chosen to demonstrate a more-exciting game of basketball with time and space changes and the new three-point shot. So Ken's friends put on an all-court press to place him at Princeton as a three-point specialist. They succeeded-and so did he as a new star at Princeton. But now organized crime saw opportunity and offered Ken bribes-and threats to his family-to fix games. Desperate, he recalled he had the phone number of an FBI agent who had posed as his referee assistant in a gambling "sting" in Minnesota. So he called him-and when Ken was accosted by gambling thugs after the game at Yale in New Haven, the FBI converged and took charge. And sports writers and the TV crews leaving the game got a new exclusive. And Ken got new merits from the media and from Princeton teammates and officials.
