The old man in "Old Man Comes" goes his own way, but when the bank robbers make off with his mule, the old man takes his complaint to the outlaws - and they regret it. The old saying "You can't go home again." applies to Smoke Hall when he tries to go back to his hometown in Iowa after a life spent as a trapper in the wild Shining Mountains in "Homecoming." He finds out in a hurry that he doesn't want any thing to do with the "Tame" Iowa country. The mountains call him back, and he answers the call.
