The Cain family, with their young son, are forced to leave their home in Scotland and venture to America in 1748, settling in the South where tariffs are being set by the North. When a slave girl Polly is willed to the Cains, the family decides to set her free and raise her as their own. Yet Polly and Will, now brother and sister, find their relationship evolving into forbidden love. Following his father's footsteps, Will joins the Southern forces with Celtic pride. He witnesses the horrors of war that the Union forces inflict on the population. Eventually the war ends. Returning home, Will watches as Union troops abuse Polly--his adopted sister and yet his heart's desire. Will shoots one of the perpetrators and is exiled from his home where he heads to Texas wondering if he will ever see Polly or his family again. Despite personal family tragedy and the life of a nomad, can Will's dreams of love and family become a reality?
