Description

In this book, Clifford Slaughter argues that in confronting and mobilising against our global and unprecedented humanitarian crisis, women are 'a vast untapped resource'. Examples are given of the role of women in past working-class, revolutionary and radical reform struggles. Slaughter maintains that, while very important gains have been made in the struggle for women's emancipation, the embedded structure of exploitation and hierarchical domination at the heart of the rule of capital mean that the liberation of women can only become complete when that rule is ended and replaced by a social order of free and equal individuals. The iniquitous ideology of 'woman's place is in the home' is discussed, with various examples. Its persistence in working-class and would-be revolutionary movements and regimes is discussed in this book. The universal humanitarian crisis - wars, starvation, unbearable poverty, displacement of communities and families - has its heaviest impact on women and families. For this crisis to be fought against and resolved, with the necessary empathy and solidarity, the unique sensibilities of women are indispensable. In this light, Slaughter points to the need for a rethinking of the theory of working-class consciousness, a theory which needs to be infused with the necessity to go beyond rational understanding of the conditions for social revolution and understand the essential content of feeling, fellow=feeling, anger, indignation, and what Gramsci called 'fighting ardour.Following Marx, Slaughter takes the social revolution to be the 'second human revolution'. The book is completed by a chapter on what we can learn from anthropology, including Steve Drury's essay on the existing evidence on the origins of humanity.
