Using the transcendental phenomenological research model, women’s perceptions of their sexual self-concept after becoming mothers was investigated. A review of the literature revealed a dearth of studies on sexual self-concept in motherhood. Overall, a review of the current research revealed four main areas of relevance: sexual self-concept development and theory, the psychology of women’s sexuality, sexuality in motherhood, and motherhood and body image. Phenomenological reduction analysis of interviews with 12 participants revealed textural themes including: a “new normal” often defines postpartum sex lives, body dissatisfaction after pregnancy and birth, societal perceptions of motherhood and societal pressures on mothers, breastfeeding and breast changes, becoming more connected to physical and sexual selves after pregnancy and birth, and women’s partners are now more attracted to them after they have become mothers. Through the imaginative or eidetic variation, a structural description of the phenomenon was created using the universal structures of temporality, spatiality, materiality, causality, body-hood, relationship to self, and relationship to others. The final synthesis revealed that women’s perceptions of their sexual self-concept after becoming mothers may be described as a complex process that is comprised of many different experiences that impact how a woman feels about herself as a sexual being. This study deepens understanding of how birthing a child informs women’s sexual self-concept and highlights the need for education and discussion about the wide range of common postpartum experiences that women may face. Findings also have consequences for sexual self-concept theory development.
