The Devil is assumed to be the ultimate performer, easily shifting from one claim to another, never telling the truth. However, in Charlotte Dacre's gothic novel, Zofloya, another character assumes mastery of performance and uses that performance, much like the Devil, to convince others that she is something she is not. Victoria has a power of her own through the use of performance to manipulate people into doing what she wants and into sharing secret information. When the Devil, in the form of a Moorish servant, Zofloya, decides that he both wants and can obtain her submission and her soul, he must penetrate this power. In order to overpower her, therefore, Zofloya strips Victoria of her power of manipulation by playing her at her own game: he enters into a parallel performance of his own that relies heavily upon the power of the spoken word---particularly confession---to render her unable to perform and, thus, unable to control herself or others. In order to assume control over Victoria's theatrical command, therefore, Zofloya must work gradually alongside her performances and use her fear of exposure by Inquisition in order to assume ownership of her. This paper analyzes this usurpation of power by way of exchanging and assuming control of performances between these two characters. By using assuming roles according to her ulterior motives, Victoria invests words with the power to create change in the physical world, a power that makes those words almost magic.
