She also kept her children's grammar school library open by volunteering and becoming its head librarian. Penny brought in other stay-at-home mothers to help keep the library open longer hours. She also brought programs like R.I.F. (Reading Is Fundamental) into the school to help children learn that reading can be fun and enjoyable. Penny had the pleasure of knowing Zelda Darling and knew a book must be written about this princess cat. Penny enjoyed having the opportunity of recording the story so that others could also enjoy reading about Zelda's zany adventures.
