Description

Our Lord Jesus Christ , after eight days from birth, deigned to receive circumcision. On the one hand, He accepted it in order to fulfill the law: "I did not come to break the law, " He said, " but to fulfill" ( Matthew 5:17 ); for He obeyed the law in order to free those who were slavishly subordinate to him, as the apostle says: "God sent His Son, obeyed the law in order to redeem the laws" ( Gal. 4: 5 ). On the other hand, He took circumcision in order to show that He really accepted the human flesh, and heretical lips were stolen, saying that Christ did not accept the true human flesh, but was born only ghostly 5. So, He was circumcised, so that His humanity would clearly be. For if He had not put on our flesh, how could a ghost, and not flesh, be circumcised? Saint Ephraim the Syrian says: "If Christ was not flesh, then whom did Joseph circumcise? But just as He was truly flesh, he was circumcised as a man, and the baby was really soaked with His blood, like a son of man; He was sick and cried in pain, as befitting a human nature. " But, in addition, He accepted carnal circumcision in order to establish spiritual circumcision for us 6 ; for having finished the decrepit that touched the flesh 7, the law, He laid the foundation for a new, spiritual. And just as the Old Testament carnal man circumcised his sensual flesh, so a new spiritual man must circumvent spiritual passions: rage, anger, envy, pride, unclean desires and other sins and sinful desires. He was circumcised on the eighth day because he prefigured us with blood His future life, which is usually called the teachers of the Church as the eighth day or century. So the writer of the canon for the circumcision of the Lord, St. Stephen 8 says: "the future is the unceasing osmago of the century, life depicts, in the presence of the Lord the Lord was circumcised by the flesh" 9 . And St. Gregory of Nyssa says this: "Circumcision according to the law was to be performed on the eighth day, and the eighth figure predicted the eighth future century 10. It is also worth knowing that circumcision in the Old Testament was established in the image of baptism and the cleansing of ancestral sin, although that sin was not completely cleansed by circumcision, which could not be until Christ voluntarily shed for us in the suffering of His pure blood. Circumcision was only a type of true cleansing, and not the most true cleansing that our Lord committed, taking sin from the midst and nailing it on the cross 11 , and instead of the Old Testament circumcision, establishing a new blessed baptism of water and the Spirit. Circumcision in those days was a kind of execution for ancestral sin and a sign that the circumcised infant was conceived in lawlessness, as David says, and his mother gave birth to him in sin ( Ps. 50: 7), which is why the ulcer remained on the adolescent body. Our Lord was sinless; for although He was likened to us in everything, he did not have sin on himself. Just as the copper serpent built in the desert by Moses was similar in appearance to a serpent, but did not have snake venom ( Num. 21: 9 ), so Christ was a true man, but not involved in human sin, and was born in a supernatural way , from a pure and husbandless Mother. He, as the sinless and the Most Legislator himself, would not need to undergo that painful legal circumcision; but since He came to take upon himself the sins of the whole world, and God, as the apostle says, who did not know sin, He made us a sin offering ( 2 Cor. 5:21), then, being without sin, undergoes circumcision, as if a sinner. And in circumcision, the Lord showed us more humility than in His birth.
