Description

Larry Ritter arrives in Anytown with a secret agenda, a lot of self-confidence, and a suitcase full of smiley faces pattern bandannas. The next day he visits with many of the town's residents and persuades them for various reasons to wear one of those and gather in Town Square that evening. A critical element throughout his many manipulations is that he must not tell anyone his real reason for doing this..His first and most critical recruit is J. Michael Arnold, the richest man in town and employer of many of the residents. Arnold is losing sleep because of dreams in which a stranger visits him and sometimes make things better for him and the company and sometimes make them worse and the town father frets that he won't be able to tell the good visitor from the bad one. When Arnold meets with his bankers wearing a smiley faces babushka about which he offers no explanation, the town in quickly abuzz. There have been rumors that either his finances or his mind were in trouble and now this.Ritter gives a smiley faces square free to anyone who agrees to wear it on his/her head - on a hat, under a hat, or without a hat; as a bandanna, a babushka, or a band. They agree to wear it at least at a signaled critical moment that evening but many choose to wear it all day. Ritter is a good judge of character and quickly assesses and guesses what buttons to push to get various people on board, often offering useful critiques and encouragement in the process. He uses different aliases and different explanations for what this is about. He takes advantage of various local characters using items like a “space alien communicator” to play head games with one another totally unrelated to his agenda yet he finds ways to step in and use that confusion to help his agenda. He learns some of the hidden realities of small town life and offers encouragement, suggestions, and even a bit of active defense when needed as he gently manipulates people with his claims and promises. While doing this he recognizes some of his own short-comings and is surprised by how much he learns about himself and others.A major problem is the woman he meets and falls for. When she learns he is using the aliases and asks why he can only say she must trust him that it will all be clear that evening. He trusts his assessment of her and risks his long-term happiness with her for his short-term success at his agenda. Finally he must find a way to keep the troublemaker who will never agree to be a bandanna-bedecked participant from showing up at Town Square. At the critical moment all is revealed and the various stories he told and claims he made are seen as not quite lies but means to an end that pleases almost everyone without seriously harming anyone. Ultimately it is all in fun, no grave dangers escaped or worlds saved, only a dedicated and determined manipulator plying his specialty with benefits for the town collectively and for many of its residents individually.
