In this fifth installment in the saga of the Haunted Law Firm, young partners Marc Washington and Rob Ashworth gain a new client, star high school football player Doug Martin. Unknown to all but a few, Martin is a hybrid Neanderthal-modern human clone, born of a host-mother within whom an embryo was implanted over eighteen years ago as part of a secret project of the Department of Defense. The DOD arranged for him to be adopted shortly after his birth, and he has been reared in Brainerd County, North Carolina by Darren and Lara Martin, while his childhood and youth have been monitored by the Defense Intelligence Agency. As the story opens, Doug Martin is a high school senior who has had a normal up-bringing, a well-adjusted young man whose biggest concerns are deciding where to attend college and what will become of his relationship with his high school sweetheart, Eva Martinez. But he is about to be given bigger problems. Not everyone in the federal government shares the desire that Doug's ancestry remain a secret. There are competing agencies with their own agendas, including the settling of old inter-agency rivalries. These forces want Martin's background revealed. One such agent is Monica Gilbert, the Firm's old adversary. Gilbert, working with her contacts at the FBI, arranges to leak enough information to an ambitious reporter to blow Martin's cover. His status as a high school athlete immediately comes under fire from rival teams, who are supported by interest groups influenced by Gilbert. They claim he should not be eligible because he is not human, which Marc immediately recognizes as cover for an old and familiar evil.Marc and Rob, aided by their paralegal Aleksandra, and with the support of the "Brainerd County Coven," headed by familiar characters Mitch McCaffrey and Alyssa McCormick-Callahan, prepare for a hearing in which Doug's athletic eligibility, and even his very humanity, are on the line. And there is still another secret. Martin has paranormal abilities.
