The retelling of a ghost story brings back memories of my childhood living in a grand manor in Clarksburg PA, this book, Beacham House, reminds me so much of that time, events that occurred and the haunting we experienced. "My name is Frederick, the third from a long line of Fredericks to be cast with this name. As I tell this story to my friends, they are not aware I am a Beacham, nor that I am one of the children written about, which of the children, you'll have to guess.I'd just finished my university term and decided to take a holiday with friends before joining the workforce, my father's world, one I'd not engrossed myself nor given much effort to consider. College mates had invited me down for a stay at their house in the country, a place I'd visited whenever my father went on one of his tirades, my hiding place of sorts. My father you see was actually my uncle, my father and mother had died while I was away at school." I wasn't the sort to get into a great deal of trouble, nor partying or drinking and therefore was at a loss as to why my father as I called him, thought my education as a Tutor, the male word for Nanny, was such a waste. I hadn't the business mind he'd hope for, nor did I care for the sort of business he dealt, land management and shipping. These were sources of great debate at home whenever I visited and truly, they are positions of great wealth but neither was what I wanted. If I'd had my say in the matter, I would have been an artist, a writer, something of that nature but father would have none of that. I recall vividly his statement about my ideas, "I'll make a businessman out of you if it kills you". I was sure he meant every word of it. What I knew he meant to say was "I'll make a man out of you, even if it kills you" would have been more to the point." This book, recalls my own experiences of growing up, falling in love with our tutor and how he, the young man employed to advance our education did far more than read books to us, I learned about life and sex, and the ghostly being that visited my room each night.
