The wind-swept mountains near the Clarion House reminded me of my homeland, a place I left so long ago to avoid the haggard masses seeping with illness. It had been years ago but I recall it vividly-- sickness all around, death walking the streets, and of these, not even they would I touch. Not even in deepest hunger would I defile my body with their vile blood.I'd lived on the edge of London society for so long that leaving would be its own hardship. Here the drunkard lot was an easy target for me to prey upon, or the forgotten harlot, drained of blood and then dashed into the sea was of no significance to anyone and therefore I was able to exist without harassment. But here, in this harsh remote place, this new land where people are fewer to dwell upon, I had to take care.My first few years were the harshest as the savage peoples of this place were not to my liking. They had the oddest odder and rarely bathed. In the heat of summer, I would bring the favored selection to a warm stream and there would caress their flesh with the freshness of the cool water before parting them of their lovely wine which I drained from their veins. It was upon these savages I existed for the longest time, taking on tribal names that linger even now. But I didn't care about that, I didn't care about them or their flimsy society. For me, they were only the means to an end, the essence of my continued existence and therefore I endured their smelly bodies for as long as I needed them, discarding their lifeless shells to the wolves who grew fat on their drained carcasses.I'd arrived at the seaport town of Boston, MA 1790, the actual date is of no use to me and I only remember the year due to the strange events that occurred upon my arrival into that depressive location. I'd arranged in advance for my belongings to be picked up upon delivery and transported to a stone dwelling I'd acquired from, well let's say-- a donor. Needless to say, the horse and driver hired for this transport was nowhere to be found at such an early hour but as the sun would soon cast its rays unto a new night, I was left with little to do but take refuse in the nearest seclusion afforded me, the opened crypt of an unknown local. As soon as I was able, I left that place and located my belongings and the sot who was to drive me, and forced him into the night to make good our contract. As the moon filled the sky and the last crate was removed from the wagon and placed into its new location, I took the liberty of collecting a refund of sorts from the fellow who'd been so laps in our arrangements.Yes, I took great delight in watching him squirm and kick but he was no match for my hunger that had only grown with the rage that burned within me caused by his delay. I held him tightly as he thrashed about a great deal more than I thought he would. I felt his warm strong body, caressing him gently as I drained the life out of him drop by drop.
