This book is a report of the seventh national study of counselor preparation programs. Data are traced over 20 years to identify changes and trends. Only data supplied by counselor preparation programs in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories are included; no secondary sources were used. The trends identified in the book suggest that the two major emphases in 1970, rehabilitation counseling and school counseling, were joined by new interest in marriage and family, community agency, counseling psychology, private practice, and substance abuse counseling during the 1980s. Part A of this book describes the longitudinal study itself, the research design and data source, and applications of data. Part B focuses on counselor preparation institutions and faculty. Part C looks specifically at Master's degree programs while Part D concentrates on Doctoral degree programs. Part E is concerned with accreditation of programs. Part F looks at modification in programs, including courses added and dropped, degree and program changes, and anticipated changes for the future. Part G focuses on financial assistance and part-time employment. Part H, which takes up more than half the book, consists of detailed data for the programs surveyed. Responses from each academic unit are reproduced in this section and programs are listed alphabetically by state. The book concludes with a bibliography, index, notes about the authors, and a list of abbreviations. (NB)
