Description

This paper highlights some of the more generic studies in computer-aided decision-making at the Division of Building Research and indicates the present and future directions of that research. It outlines fundamental contributions made to the mathematical basis of computer-aided design and computer-aided planning. This has included development of basic mathematical models of engineering systems, and their optimization using iterative linear programming. The process can be interactive or automatic or a combination of the two and can include non-quantifiable factors in this last case. Automatic generation of form for shell structures was also introduced. For planning, an earlier phase of the decision process was considered, that of resource allocation, location, or layout problems, and computer-aided techniques for optimization were again developed and are in wide use. Further work has been concerned with the introduction of additional knowledge or expertise into the problem-solving or decision process. One aspect of this is the development of more basic relationships between the fundamental properties of a system such as effectiveness, efficiency, diversity, dispersal, and robustness. Relationships between these characteristics and the elements of the system have been developed allowing a more fundamental and knowledge-based approach to planning and design of complex systems. New solution techniques with an artificial intelligence characteristic have also been developed for solution of these problems and are providing results equal to or better than any previously reported. The focus of research is now on intelligent knowledge-based systems and other 'intelligent' software for computer-aided and automated decision-making including intelligent optimization techniques. The aim is to provide superior techniques for the computer-aided decision systems industry with application to design, planning, automation and management of production facilities for goods and services, thereby providing comparative advantage in each of these areas in the international market place.
