Thomas Harrington was one of the most famous people in Ireland during the 1830s. Born in Union Hall, a small town in West Cork. He was a day labourer who in the spring of 1831 suddenly became extremely warm and caught a cold while cutting a rock for a neighbour. The cold led to pleurisy and other ailments from which he never recovered. Thomas was visited in his bed by the local vicar who read the bible to him and soon noticed the complete change in Harrington's demeanor and character. Harrington who was a self-described sinner and uneducated peasant started speaking elequently about the word of God. And spoke philosophically about god, death, and illness. Harrington also started seeing lights in his cabin and his guests who flocked to hear him speak started seeing the lights too. Soon people came from all over to hear Thomas Harrington speak and see the lights for themselves. This book contains eye-witness accounts of the lights from some notable locals like Dr Daniel Donovan who went on to become a heroic figure in Skibbereen during the famine. Harrington's story is both interesting and powerful.
