Otros Recuerdos is the fourth book in my Recuerdos series. It follows Recuerdos, Recuerdos II, and Recuerdos III. All the books in this series are a collection of short vignettes about events that have occurred in Guadalupe county since the late 1800s. This installment of the Recuerdos series includes stories about Santa Rosa, Puerto de Luna, Cuervo, Agua Negra, Los Tanos, Milagro, Vaughn, Pintada, La Junta, Newkirk, Pintada, and Pastura. Some of the communities no longer exist. They cannot be found in modern maps of the area, yet at one time they were prospering communities in Guadalupe county. La Junta and Los Tanos are two good examples of communities that have faded into time. La Junta was located south of Dilia. It was located at the point where the Gallinas River flowed into the Pecos River. Junta is Spanish for the meeting or joining and the two rivers met or joined at La Junta. Los Tanos sprang up east of Santa Rosa in 1901. It was a railroad boom town that quickly went bust. It faded into history with the same speed that it had been created. At one time it had a church and a school. Like La Junta, Los Tanos is now completely deserted. Newspaper articles are also used in many of the vignettes. Most of the articles are from New Mexico newspapers, but some are from articles that were published in newspaper from other states. Those articles show that at a particular point in time the events that were happening in our county were significant enough to attract widespread coverage. Some of the vignettes are about individuals in the county whose lives were of enough significance to have played an important role in the county's passage through time. Those individuals contributed to the growth of the area. Some were government officials while others were businessmen. As in the previous books in the Recuerdos series, I am continuing the use old photographs, wherever possible, to illustrate the story. I find that people share a certain fascination with period photos. Old photographs are very valuable in helping us reminisce about our past. I am a firm believer that "a picture is worth a thousand words." Old photographs help protect and preserve memories of our past. My friends and fellow senior citizens from the Santa Rosa Campos Senior Citizen Center have very graciously shared old stories and reminisces, recuerdos, about growing up in the area. They have very willingly shared their cuentos, stories, of the area. In this group are Joe "Alcario" Martínez, Elauterio "Laute" Lucero, Lorenzo "Tudy" Sánchez, Charles Wiley, William "Billy" Sierra, Albert "Friggie" Campos, David Luna, Rudy Sánchez, and a husband and wife team, Gilbert and Agnes Romero. They have all been very willing to recount and share their wonderful memories of Santa Rosa and Guadalupe county. The individual recuerdos help tell the story of our county's past. Many are stories of successes and triumphs that were experienced by residents of the county. Some are stories of tragedies that occurred. Some tell about the lore of the area. Others area about a way of life that no longer exists. All help portray everyday events that cumulatively shape the history of Guadalupe county.
