Description

Wild and Woolly is a collection of forty-two tales that happened or in some cases, purportedly happened, in Guadalupe County. The all share the characteristics of the two definitions of wild and wooly. Many of the wild and wooly tales also have period photographs to illustrate the story. The subjects are wide and varied with the main theme being violence. Twenty-three of the tales are about murder, with some of them having the death of a spouse as a central theme. In some of the cases jealousy proved the spark that led to a death with the perpetrator usually being a male. However, in one case, a woman killed her husband. Many of the violent cases were fueled by liquor. One of the murders was committed by a boy just twelve years old who killed a nine-year-old companion. In another case, a young disabled boy was killed by his father. One of the stories is about the mysterious disappearance of two couples who were passing through New Mexico. They spent the night in Vaughn and then vanished. Their remains were never found. Even the governor of New Mexico got involved in the search for the missing tourists. The red light districts in Vaughn and Santa Rosa are the subjects of two of the tales. The one in Santa Rosa ended with the death of the man who was operating the "resort," the term used by the newspaper to describe the house of prostitution. Many of the wild and woolly tales are accompanied by photographs. Some of the photographs are from private collections and are very rare. Among the photographs are mug shots from the New Mexico State Penitentiary of several of the perpetrators of wild and woolly acts committed in Guadalupe county and depicted in Wild and Woolly Tales of Guadalupe County.
