Thirty-four-year-old sheriff Sam Preston took a long sip of hot black coffee. It was a nice quiet day in Paradise, Iowa. Half of his staff of twelve patrolmen, one detective, and one deputy sheriff were on vacation. Sam had forced six of the patrolmen to use some of their vacation time, and the one detective, David Hammer, was busy getting caught up on paperwork. The highest point of the week had been a couple break-ins by two teenagers, and an overturned eighteen-wheeler that had misjudged a curve coming into town. The population of Paradise was just a little over eight thousand people, and covered a little more than one square mile. The two main businesses in the small town were a solar manufacturing plant, and a bio-fuel processing center. Mayor Grant Jones was proud of the two green companies, and used it to attract other businesses to the small town. Business real estate was still cheap, and there was plenty of room to grow. In a recent election, the sheriff had just recently beat out a good ole boy sheriff that ran the town like he owned it. It would take time for everyone to get used to the new guy watching the hen house. His secretary Anna Scott was going over the list of things to do for the sheriff, when the power went out. Sam looked over to his deputy Darrel Walton."Deputy, what the hell is going on; the weather is great. Someone must have hit a power pole again. Let's wait the five minutes for the city power system to kick in. Meanwhile, Anna, give a call to the power company and find out where the break in the line is."
