Description

New boy in town Todd Benson meets fellow high school student Alice Dorset in class where they are studying “Romeo and Juliet”. They question why the star-crossed lovers acted as they did. Todd finds a workshop under his missing Uncle Bill's garage and notes that suggest the big device there is a time-travel device. He doesn't understand the physics, but from the notes he can figure out what each part is and how to set it to have the desired effect.Eager for an adventure, he wants to travel back to ask Romeo and Juliet what they were thinking. Worried that his uncle is missing because he time-traveled and got stuck in the past, Todd tells Alice his plan so someone will know what happened if he meets the same fate. She wants to go with him. After some fumbling around getting the machine ready, they do travel back to Verona, year 1303. To their surprise, they can identify the main characters on sight because the people there look like the actors in the film version they watched in class. After minor adjustments to the play's straightforward action, the four title characters are together in Juliet's bed - to stay warm and to talk. A detail not mentioned by Shakespeare then complicates things. Juliet's cousin Tybalt, peeping in her bedroom window yet again this night, sees four people, including Romeo, in Juliet's bed. With some difficulty, including Lady Capulet's questions about how he knows who is in Juliet's room, Tybalt rouses her parents to defend the family honor. This results in Tybalt's introduction to what will become a classic scary movie ploy; a hasty headfirst exit down the arbor from Juliet's balcony by her Nurse; and an introduction of Alice to Juliet's parents that doesn't end well. That encounter sets up the need to cleanse Verona of an invasion of witches as the major theme that the Prince of Verona will use as his excuse to seize the lands and titles of the Capulets and the Montagues to finally end their generations long feud. He doesn't know he is being recorded by the very pair he intends to use for his purpose.Todd and Alice show Friar Laurence Shakespeare's play and convince him that there will be a disaster for Romeo and Juliet if things happen as described in there as they seem to be doing. He will try to help them persuade the nobles of the danger.Friar Laurence, Romeo, Juliet, Todd, and Alice perform Shakespeare's play for the nobles of Verona to warn of the dangers of their rivalries but those people aren't moved. The Prince claims the play is of the Devil. The Capulets and the Montagues, always vying for the Prince's favor and public attention, clamber aboard the bandwagon to find and kill the strangers who have been identified as the witches “and all those associated with them” - with little thought about who that includes.Depending on the technology that got them here to protect them, Todd and Alice take Romeo and Juliet with them and climb onto the pyre built beside the Prince's palace to burn them as witches. They tell the gathered crowd about the Prince's secret plan to seize the lands of the rivals. Then the four simply disappear in a puff of smoke. When the four young people reappear and produce evidence to support their claim against the Prince, they are able to resolve the threat to themselves without bloodshed. Convinced of the danger spelled out in the play now, the people of Verona agree to the time-travelers' suggestion about how to avoid the tragedy while protecting history and a play that will be a favorite after it is written in three hundred years. Todd and Alice make it back home safely. They have learned what happened to Uncle Bill and got an important tip that will assure that Todd can protect his uncle's estate from his parent's who might try to sell it off as scrap.
