Description

Peter and Phylida are both eighteen years old and in their last term at school, about to sit University entrance exams. They have known each other and been close, though not romantic, friends for more than six years. Peter is just recovering from a serious telling off by the headmaster Mr Murdoch for writing a rather raunchy poem in the sixth form magazine but talks his way out of punishment by reminding the Head how much he knows about the latter's abuse of several pupils. Phylida is distraught to hear Peter's dilemma, should he wait and have the head removed at the end of term or risk being expelled and thus be unable to get to university? They suddenly realise how much they mean to each other and have fallen very much in love. They agree to celebrate this fact that evening but as they are leaving school the headmaster is deliberately run over and killed outside the school while approaching Peter. The police start investigations but next day the two students are so churned up that they go home early, back to Peter's house. When his father, editor of a leading newspaper, gets home, he tells his son and Phylida that they have missed a really dreadful development. A close friend and fellow student, Ruby, has been shot dead in the school car Park and Peter at once starts to realise how the web of abusive behaviour, jealousy among the staff and terrible behaviour by some pupils has led the local police chief, Inspector Arthur Forsdyke, to suspect a very large number of people of either one or both of the murders. But Phyl and Pete have access to far more about all the intrigues going on and convince the policeman that only they can help him get to the truth. A Tale of romance. sexual malpractices, a crunch cricket match, internal staff quarrels, a budding young poetess with an awful stammer, a teacher and student's shared obsession with motor racing and Peter's own knowledge of the real happenings lead to the pair having to defend friends who are obvious suspects, while helping the police without endangering the innocent. But the denouement provides a quite unexpected twist where Peter even risks losing Phylida rather than break a promise never to tell the truth about one of the victims. The fast moving story introduces both nice and thoroughly nasty teachers and students, but finally only Peter and Phylida can save the school's reputation and satisfy the police as they unravel the incredibly cleverly carried out murders.
