Description

After being kept in captivity for weeks, four boys escaped. They do not speak the same language as their kidnappers and cannot figure out what it is they want, except to use them to carry heavy packs of supplies from one camp to another. They are tired, hungry and cold. The youngest, a seven year old named Tyke, has been seriously injured. Three of the boys are sons of a fisherman. Only Grayton knows anything about surviving in the forest where they have hidden from the men who had captured them. They must make a shelter, fish, trap rabbits, dig roots and gather berries. If the the coastal boys listen to the twelve-year-old mountain boy, they might survive the coming winter. If help does not come, they will have to stay hidden. Those who kidnapped them are camping nearby. Caution has to be taken. The boys must make a shelter, dry fish, rabbit meat, roots and berries and keep praying for enough time to prepare for the coming winter. Only twelve year old Grayton knows how to survive in the wilderness. The three sons of a fisherman know nothing about what a man should do. Twelve year old Blazer, ten-year-old Jenner and seven-year-old Tyke only know how to do women's work. Grayton hates it that boys weave baskets, do women's work at drying racks and clean rabbit pelts. As winter sets in, Grayton comes to appreciate the skills of the boys from port city. The boys wait, believing the kidnappers will be leaving before winter. Their tents are not adequate and they are not prepared for fighting off the wolf packs that hunt in the mountain. Grayton sits in a tree above their hidden shelter, watching the men in their camp and wondering why they are here. He wants to go home. The boys are trapped here. There are four more camps like this one between here and the ocean where these men have ships anchored off shore. There is no escape for the boys. Running down hill toward the ocean would only get them captured again. Even if they could reach the ocean, they would be a hundred miles from the closest seaport and nothing sails in these waters this time of year. Winter is setting in. There is no where to go and wolves have already been trying to dig through the side of the boys' shelter. Sitting on a limb high above their hidden shelter, Jenner told Grayton, "We voted you to be our king. What would you call this kingdom?" The boys came from the kingdoms of Emron. Grayton told him, "There are four kingdoms. This, I would name, the Fifth Kingdom."
