The Great Divide is a novella. #2 in the Ty Chase series. Ty Chase is an 1870's bounty hunter living in and around Taos, New Mexico. His adventures take him far and wide in his quest to bring the bad man to meet the lawman. In this story, The Great Divide, Ty Chase, bounty hunter rides west in search of a lost party of settlers. The year is 1877, thirty years after the Donner Party encountered untold hardship and tragic loss of life, high in the Sierras. Three families including the Remfert family; Homer Remfert, his wife Mattie, and their three children, Titus Hodge, his wife and three children, and Christopher Mitchell, his wife and son disappear in the same region. The wagon train consists of thirteen souls, ten of which are children. Homer Remfert, the wagon master of a small wagon train headed west, is a close family friend of Ben Camp, one of the Pinkerton agents that helped Ty Chase bring Lou Pickett and his gang to the hangman a year earlier. At the spring thaw, these thirteen people, six wagons with two teams each, forty horses, and eighty head of cattle depart from Saint Louis, Missouri. The group begins their trek with the last of the heavy snows still on the ground, but by most standards it is a late start. Homer Remfert wishes to reach California before the next winter.But, many weeks pass beyond the wagon train's expected arrival date, Ben Camp becomes anxious and fears the worst. Camp contacts Ty Chase for his advice. Knowing that winter is coming on, Chase offers to investigate. Chase begins the search at Salt Lake City and traces their passage westward into Nevada. He is soon joined by Ben Camp in Reno. From there, they follow into the high Sierra mountains.
