FROM THE BEGINNING OF OUR EXISTENCE, HUMANS (SAPIENS) HAVE CONTEMPLATED THE NATURE OF OUR EXISTENCE as if it was imbued in us. At the start of the 20th century, much progress was made in understanding both the macro and the micro worlds that constitute our reality. Over billions of years, life on our planet has evolved from unicellular organisms to trillions of cells in the human body. Furthermore, we live on a planet that is just a microcosm of a much greater Cosmos. We live in a galaxy of over 200 billion stars in a universe with as many galaxies as there are stars. Moreover, we now know that the atom is not the smallest entity as the Greeks once thought, yet another microcosm with denizens unimaginable a century before. Einstein and others proved that space and time are relativistic and that the speed of light bounds our spacetime. We have determined that we are all made of stardust and sent probes to other planets within our solar system in search of our beginning. Although science has opened many doors for us, many doors remain locked awaiting the key to our understanding. In this book, I have emphasized the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics and the role that they play in defining our universe. Yet according to Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem, our laws remain incomplete. We have defined the relationships between energy and entropy, but we have not defined the process from which order is achieved from disorder or the hidden consciousness that seems to permeate the Cosmos. As we continue to revolve around a mediocre star, we wonder if we are the only cynosures of God's eye, or if there are other worlds among us. Furthermore, as the world becomes more cosmopolitan, we must understand and appreciate our common heritage.
