The soldiers and others who follow in their wake then loot and burn everyone's homes. Azara has little choice but to flee the area at once, although her husband and eldest daughter are missing. Together with her two young sons and her youngest daughter, she joins surviving members of her community in a harrowing week-long trek through a hellish landscape of burnt-out villages and fearful, uprooted communities torn apart. Those fleeing have to deal with mounting privation, loss, psychological trauma, injuries, illness, and the ever-present danger they could be attacked again. Faced with the need to keep going and uncertain of what lies ahead, Azara, her children, and the others in this heartrending exodus will need to put aside any differences and work together. Even more so, they'll have to draw deeply upon remaining reserves of mental and physical strength in order to reach the border and escape across it to Bangladesh.
