This is a revised autobiography of a rural physician and coroner of a mid-sized Louisiana parish who was able to accomplish one of the highest possible goals in spite of his self-admitted academic ability. Having been the oldest of nine siblings, six or whom also became doctors, he explains how he was forced to encounter numerous hardships and ever-present challenges in order to conquer a goal that seemed virtually impossible. Dr. Cefalu tells how he managed to utilize both positive and detrimental factors from his early childhood to his advantage to reach his ultimate success. Along with these factors, many other constant struggles and endless battles with bipolar illness and obesity, he somehow managed to convert these deterrents into an incredibly advantageous situation, whereby his ability to overachieve and outperform would make up the difference. Even one of his decisions to quit medical school turned out to be a very important impetus in his eventual success. In the second section of this book, he explains the many functions, procedures, and powers of the coroner's office, and details the position of coroner that he held for fourteen years. The purpose of this was to set the stage for his being able to describe and report in depth the many unusual and bizarre cases that he encountered during this time. Regarding his educational background and experience, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Zoology from Southeastern Louisiana College in Hammond, Louisiana, and a medical degree from L.S.U. Medical School in New Orleans; worked in numerous emergency rooms; held many professional jobs, including the public health clinic, local mental health center, and substance-abuse clinic; was awarded several state contracts; served as medical director of both the parish and Hammond City jails; practiced family medicine for 30 years; and held the position of coroner for 14 years. He accomplished all of this in spite of his many problems---the biggest factors being his bipolar illness, low self-esteem and lack of confidence. .......a compelling and inspirational autobiography......accounts of the many unusual cases he saw in his years as a Tangipahoa Parish coroner are entertaining and illuminating. Cefalu is a master of self-deprecation, attributing his achievements in life to his strong will to succeed rather than his mental acuity. --Clarion ReviewDr. Vincent N.
