Description

Jim Clarks, a young, small-town newspaper reporter, is sent to cover a house fire where a family of three is missing. After a disappointing interview with the sheriff, he's just about to call it a day when the only thing from the home left standing, the brick fireplace, collapses. A photograph to accompany his nothing story allows him to see a notebook in a hidey-hole within the fireplace bricks. It turns out to be for the young boy who is missing. Vance. His treatment by the sheriff, in his mind, justifies absconding with the journal. As darkness falls, he stops at a roadside rest area and reads by his car's dome light. His entrance into Vance's world. A place he soon finds is not a pleasant one. Flipping through the pages and days he watched Vance grow up via his diary; crude Crayola pictures evolving into words and sentences as the years passed. Its validity hard to question until Jim comes upon an entry involving Vance healing quickly from burns. Unnaturally so.Everything he's read is now a steaming pile of crap. The life sucked out of it by this bogus claim. But checking Vance's mention of another incident locks in his legitimacy. It's his introduction into a cyber hell that the young boy, Vance, was going through because of his ability. A healing gift plundered by Vance's own parents, they allowing a dark internet site, SNUFF&GRIND.COM, to take advantage of his talent for which they were paid well. Videos that exploit him in what evolves into snuff films. One Mr. Sims shows up to protect their investment. Mr. Sims is their intermediary and watchdog, some monetary gain pushing him to devise methods of getting the most out of Vance, ramping up the snuff video productions. Infinite Zero, The Grand Finale, is where things come to a head, so to speak. This last video possibly being the death of Vance. Betrayed by everyone, even his parents, he accepts a lifeline thrown from the voices in his head. The Dark WebThe world wide web is a veritable cornucopia of information and entertainment a tap or click away. One stop shopping for almost anything in the world you want or want to know. Most of us utilize just a small part of the web: social sites, gaming, shopping, ratings on products and services, etc. But there is a dark side to the web. Anyone can put anything he or she wants on the internet; all that is required is a computer and a website. From family pictures of babies to terrorist beheadings. Where there is a market with profit to be made there is a product that will be provided. Sites that go beyond what most consider acceptable. People who overlook the damage they do in promoting videos detrimental to their subjects. To my knowledge, there is no www.wwwpolice.com.This story isn't for the faint of heart. Chapter 1, snuff&grind.com, involves many brutal acts. And though there are blood, gore, and veins between the teeth things done to Vance, rest assured there are no gruesome details. Those are in chapter 31⁄2, Déjà Vu, but are more clinical than grisly. Don't you feel better now?In a sense, this is a horror story. But one of survival. How much we hold on to life no matter the conditions. The things we can endure and still maintain the will to live. The lengths we will go to stay alive, even if it's a life not worth living, hoping there is justification in the end.Horror stories have horrific endings. Read my previous threesome. This is an ending I had to settle into. The direction one I hadn't considered until I was well down its path. The longer I continued the more right it felt. Sometimes things turn out for a reason. But it must fit seamlessly into the story. Some endings are meant to jolt the senses. Some just need to settle into them.
